New Richmond's wrestlers had their pinning combinations ready when Somerset's wrestlers arrived at the NRHS gym last Thursday.

Seven of New Richmond's eight wins on the mat came by pins, carrying the Tigers to a 57-21 victory over the Spartans. New Richmond also had one decision victory and the Tigers accepted two forfeits.

The meet started at 220 pounds, where New Richmond's Gage Manske scored a pin. After the Tigers forfeited at 285 pounds, the Tigers charged through the lower weights. Seth Leavens and Dylan Dowd both needed less than a minute to get pins in the two lowest weights. The Tigers received forfeits in the next two weight classes, before Shane Blackman scored a decision at 132 pounds, raising the Tiger lead to 33-6.

The final Tiger wins came on pins from Abe Anderson, Aaron Daul, Michael Steel and Dominic Ficociello.

Tiger coach Mark Neumann was quite pleased with how the Tigers took charge in their matches and were able to finish off their matches with pins.

"I thought (the match) would be closer," Neumann said.

The Tigers travelled to Wisconsin Dells to compete in the 2012 Dells Duals Classic Tournament over the weekend. The Tigers fared quite well again, winning four of their five dual matches to take second place in their pool. New Richmond's wins came over Benilde St. Margaret, Portage, St. Croix Falls and Melrose-Mindoro/G-E-T. New Richmond's only loss came against Oshkosh North, 40-28.

Abe Anderson and Blackman both went undefeated through the tournament, while Leavens, Steel, Manske, John Keifer and Derek Dowd all went 4-1 in Saturday's action.

New Richmond's junior varsity wrestlers also fared well in Friday night's JV portion of the tournament. Neumann said Garret Hildebrandt and Cole Birkeland led the JV performance.

Several of those JV wrestlers were pressed into action during Saturday's tournament because of injuries in the Tiger lineup. Hildebrandt ended up 3-1 in the varsity tournament, showing the depth the Tigers have in the lower weights.

Coach Neumann said Hildebrandt, Birkeland, Caleb Neumann and Tyler Hawkins all gave strong efforts when they were pulled into the varsity lineup.

The Tigers face one of their toughest assignments of the season this Thursday when they travel to Ellsworth for their Middle Border Conference dual match with the perennial MBC champions.
