The weather tried its best to make a mess of the New Richmond Baseball Club Youth Tournament this weekend, but adjustments were made and the tournament went on successfully.

New Richmond had three teams place among the top three teams in their age divisions of the tournament. The New Richmond U14 team earned the championship in its eight-team bracket. The New Richmond U12 team took second place in its nine-team bracket. The New Richmond Black U10 team placed third among the 13 teams in its bracket.

The heavy rains overnight Friday and Saturday left fields saturated. That resulted in delays of one hour on Saturday morning and two hours Sunday, but the games did go on. The biggest work detail was needed at Citizens Field, where a crew of eight worked to get the field ready.

Tournament management was thrown a curve on Friday morning when it was found that the high school varsity field was unusable. The high winds had taken the bleachers behind home plate and lifted them onto the backstop, which buckled onto the playing field. The games scheduled for the varsity field were moved to the JV field.

The tournament used a number of locales, including the high school softball and baseball fields, Citizens Field, Hatfield Park and the Star Prairie ballpark.

The U14 team earned the championship with an 11-3 win over Hudson in the title game. New Richmond defeated Hallie 4-1 in the semifinals and Lake Elmo 15-2 in the quarterfinals.

New Richmond's U12 reached the championship game, suffering a 7-0 loss to the Eau Claire Nationals in the title game. New Richmond won four games to reach the championship clash. Their wins came over Elk Mound 5-0, Prior Lake 5-4, St. Croix Central 12-1 and Osceola 6-3.

The only loss for the New Richmond Black U10 came in the semifinals. They started the tournament with a 6-4 win over Elk Mound. They then beat Oakdale 12-8, New Richmond Orange 12-2 and Menomonie 12-6 before losing 8-3 to Rice Lake in the semifinals. They then defeated Elk Mound 11-9 in the third place game.
