New Richmond youth soccer teams compete in state qualifiers

The New Richmond Soccer Club had five teams participate in the state tournament qualifying tournaments over the weekend.

The New Richmond U11 C3 girls, coached by David Garrett, finished the regular season in third place with a 6-3-1 record. They received a bye into the second round of their tournament and lost a close game 2-0 to St. Croix Valley.

The U13 C2 girls, coached by Mike Giannini, finished the regular season in second place with a 7-3-2 record. They received a bye into the second round before losing a 1-0 heartbreaker to Hastings, Minn.

The U11 C3 boys, coached by Stephanie Schleicher, finished the regular season in second place with an 8-1-1 record. They received a bye into the second round before losing 3-1 to Southeast Soccer Club (SES).

The U14 C2 boys, coached by Mike Merritt, finished the regular season in fifth place with a 6-5-1 record. They opened the playoffs with an upset win against Eau Claire in overtime 2-1. In the second round they lost to top seed Chippewa Falls 6-0.

The U17 C3 boys, coached by Tom Nagel, finished the regular season in third place with a 5-5-2 record. They beat Sibley 5-2 to advance to the state tournament. They will open the state tournament, held in Hugo Minn., on Sunday at 1 p.m., with the opponent to be determined. Their second game will be on July 22 at 5 p.m. Depending on their record in pool play, they could advance to the state championship on July 26 at 1 p.m.
