“It just kind of worked out that the owner who had it was ready to leave,” said Perfect Reflection owner Lori Mathys. “I was kind of looking this direction. I didn’t have my sights set on this space. It just kind of worked out that way.”

In Somerset, Perfect Reflection does hair, facials, makeup, nail services, massages, tanning and more. In New Richmond, Mathys will focus on just the basics.

“New Richmond will be basically hair,” Mathys said. “So we’ll do hair coloring, perms and cuts for the whole family. And we’ll do facial waxing and makeup applications.”

She said she hopes to bring gel polish for nails to her New Richmond location in the future.

Mathys first started the venture in 2004.

“I had been teaching cosmetology for a while and it got kind of old driving to the Cities, especially when the Stillwater bridge was down,” Mathys said. “So I wanted to go back to doing hair full time, but I didn’t want to work for someone.”

Business has been good for Mathys, and she has expanded multiple times.

“We’re on our third location in Somerset,” Mathys said. “I started out by myself in just a little space, and I was there for just about a year. Then I moved into a bigger space. And then, last year we bought space in a building.”

Expanding to a more high-profile location in a bigger city will provide the space Mathys needs to better serve her growing number of repeat customers.

“We have four stylists in Somerset and four stations,” Mathys said. “When we can’t accommodate everyone, we had no other options for getting people in except to expand. And I think New Richmond will be fun. I’m excited to be in a bigger town.”

A bigger town also means more competition, but Mathys plans to bring some new product lines to town that other salons aren’t offering, and she feels the expansion will serve a need for her current customers.

“There are a lot of good salons, but I feel like we have a good clientele from Somerset, and a lot of them live or work in New Richmond. So I think it will add some convenience for our clients to be able to have some of our services here. And maybe some people in New Richmond will find out about our spa and just take that five-minute drive to Somerset.”

Hours for Perfect Reflection’s New Richmond location will be 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Wednesdays and Thursdays, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Fridays, and 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturdays.
