Newkirk moves back inside for Badgers
University of Wisconsin defensive lineman Mike Newkirk is expected to move back inside when the Badgers host 13th-ranked Michigan on Saturday.
Newkirk moved from tackle to end when Jamal Cooper was cut in August, and Kurt Ware was still recovering from knee surgery.
Now, with tackle Jason Chapman out for the year, the junior Newkirk is again listed as the No. 1 tackle on the depth chart opposite Nick Hayden. Chapman apparently hurt a knee in last weekend's loss at Ohio State.
Ware has been used for about 10 plays a game in recent weeks.
Newkirk says he's happy to return to his natural position at tackle, but when he signed with the Badgers, he said he agreed to play where he's needed. Newkirk has started all 10 games for Wisconsin with 30 tackles, including 4.5 for losses.
