NR boys stick with Osceola; draw Holmen in tourney

Email

The New Richmond boys stayed right with the hottest team in the Middle Border Conference last Friday.

But in the fourth quarter Osceola was able to edge ahead of the Tigers for a 60-47 win.

On Saturday Osceola beat Holmen 59-51. This is significant because New Richmond will be facing Holmen in the opening round of the WIAA Division 2 regional tournament next Tuesday.

The New Richmond boys end their regular season this Friday. The Tigers will be trying to end a seven-game losing streak when they play at Durand on Friday. Durand currently ranks as the bottom team in the MBC.

The Tigers then move into WIAA Division 2 regional play next Tuesday. The Tigers received the sixth seed in the regional, ahead of Ellsworth and Durand. The Tigers will play at Holmen at 7 p.m. next Tuesday, after Holmen drew the third seed.

Tiger coach John Elkin said he was expecting to play Baldwin-Woodville in the first round of the playoffs. B-W and Holmen tied for the third seed in the voting among coaches in the seeding meeting. B-W then deferred to Holmen.

Holmen went to the state tournament last year, but graduated most of last year's team. Elkin said Holmen is an athletic team, but doesn't possess a lot of height.

Elkin said he was encouraged by the Tigers' play at Osceola, considering the Tigers were without two of their starters for most of the game. Senior guard Garret Fletch missed last week with an injury. Late in the first quarter of Friday's game, senior post Lee Stovall sprained his ankle and couldn't return.

Elkin said Fletch should be playing Friday, but Stovall's ankle is an uncertainty.

The Tigers were tied with Osceola at 40-40 after three quarters. Osceola hit a flurry of shots with about five minutes left in the game to pull ahead. The Chieftains were deadly from the free throw line, particularly Ross Benitz. Benitz was 8-8 from the line in the fourth quarter.

Elkin made a switch in the starting lineup last week. He put Alec Slocum at point guard and moved Brock Peterson to the three spot. This put Peterson in a position where he could get more scoring chances and he scored 22 points in the two games last week.

With Stovall hurt, Kyle Steen and Pete Elkin had to play nearly the entire game in the post. Elkin finished with 12 points and Steen with 11. Elkin led the team with eight rebounds and Steen grabbed six rebounds. Peterson led the team with four assists and three steals.

In last Tuesday's 60-41 loss at Menomonie, the Tigers fell behind early and got overwhelmed by one of the best Menomonie teams in recent years. Menomonie has five losses, but four are to Big Rivers Conference leaders River Falls and Hudson.

Peterson led the Tigers with 14 points against Menomonie, but nobody else scored more than six points. Steen and Peterson each grabbed six rebounds and Peterson led the Tigers with six steals against Menomonie.
