NRHS ranked 13th best in Wisconsin
New Richmond High School has been ranked by a national magazine as the 13th best high school in Wisconsin.
New Richmond High School was ranked 1,305th in the nation and awarded silver status by virtue of its scores of 29.0 on the college readiness index, 3.1 on math proficiency, 3.5 in reading proficiency and a 17:1 student-to-teacher ratio.New Richmond School District Superintendent Jeff Moberg said this is the first time to his knowledge that NRHS has been recognized by a national magazine with a ranking like this.
“It’s a nice honor for all of us — our teachers, our staff, our administration, our board and our kids,” said NRHS Principal Tom Wissink. “It’s nice that all those folks putting in all the hard work and seeing it pay off with some nice recognition like this. It takes a lot of pieces working together to make it happen.”
Middleton High School is the top-ranked high school in Wisconsin with a 51.3 college readiness index score and 3.4 and 3.6 scores in math proficiency and reading proficiency, respectively. Middleton High, which received gold status, ranked 399th in the nation. Only 34 of 485 Wisconsin schools received gold or silver status. Bronze status was awarded to 80 Wisconsin schools.
“Given the criteria that they used, I think we’re kind of in the right spot,” Moberg said. “We did well in each of those categories, and that’s how we got a good overall score. Our goal is to be in the top 10 percent of districts, and that’s what we’re working toward.”
The nation’s top ranking went to School for the Talented and Gifted in Dallas. The Texas school hit 100 on the college readiness index with scores of 3.8 in geometry proficiency and 3.6 in reading proficiency.
Moberg and Wissink hope to maintain the school’s ranking among Wisconsin schools, and perhaps even move up the list in future years.
“We’re really excited about it and see it as a compliment and a testament to everyone involved and the hard work put in by our teachers, our students, our parents and community,” Wissink said. “But we’re always looking to get better at what we do and continue to make progress. Every year, whether it’s individually as teachers, or as a principal in a building, or as a district system, we review data, set district and school goals. … Ultimately, it’s about making sure our kids are prepared to step out of here whether they walk into a career, or the military, or a two-year college or a four-year college.”
