"I knew I was nominated for one, but when Mrs. (Jenny) Wander came and got me I thought I was in trouble," she said.

Instead, she was shocked to learn of her scholarship.

"I couldn't believe it," she said. "It made my day."

The scholarships are typically used to help pay college tuition, Price said. She plans to attend the Universtiy of Wisconsin-Eau Claire in the fall where she'll pursue a degree in journalism or mass communication.

"The goal is to become a journalist or news anchor... or maybe something in radio," she said. "Something that involves communicating with people."

Along with focusing on her schoolwork, Price is also involved in FFA, Forensics and girls golf. She formerly was part of Key Club and has taken AP literature, AP psychology and AP biology classes. She's also involved in choir, art and school plays.

The Herb Kohl Initiative Scholarship was established in October 1997. Initiative Scholarship Awarded to date: Approximately $1,199,000 to 1,199 students.

"Education is the key to the future of Wisconsin and our nation. I am very proud of the accomplishments of these students and teachers, and look forward to the great contributions they will make in the future," Kohl said.

Price is the daughter of Clifford and Judy Price of Star Prairie.
