The Phipps Oratorio Society is a regional community chorus that annually performs major works for chorus, orchestra, and soloists. Membership is open to any interested singer of high school age and older without audition. Prior singing experience as well as basic musicianship skills are helpful. A membership fee of $25 helps to defray the costs of the performance.
The 2013 performance will include Antonio Vivaldi's joyful "Gloria" and J. S. Bach's cantata "I Will the Cross Gladly Carry" for baritone soloist, orchestra, and chorus on Sunday, March 24 at 2 p.m. at Bethel Highlands Church in Hudson. The featured soloist for the Bach cantata is professional baritone Aaron Engebreth. Soloists for "Gloria" will be auditioned from the chorus. Thomas Dahle, music director, will conduct the rehearsals and the performance.
Weekly rehearsals will begin on Sunday, Jan. 20, with registration and music distribution beginning at 2 p.m. in the music studio of The Phipps Center, 109 Locust St. Except for the first one, rehearsal time is from 2:30 to 5 p.m. every Sunday at the center. Singers are expected to attend the vast majority of the nine scheduled rehearsals, and should not miss more than two. Attendance at the final rehearsal with orchestra on Saturday, March 23, from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., is mandatory.
General admission tickets for the Oratorio Society's performance are $22 for adults and $10 for students of all ages. Reservations may be made by contacting The Phipps ticket office at (715) 386-8409 or online at The Phipps.
