The five-game winning streak of the Somerset girls basketball team came to an abrupt end last Friday when the Spartans faced Middle Border Conference leading Osceola.

Playing on the Chieftains' court, the Spartans were in the game until the latter stages of the second quarter. That's when Osceola finished the half on a 14-1 run to raise their lead to 40-22. From there the Chieftains cruised past the Spartans, 65-36.

The loss leaves the Spartans with a 9-5 season record and a 5-5 record in the MBC. The next game for the Spartans is this Thursday at Baldwin-Woodville. This will be a good test for the Spartans, who led for much of the game against B-W in the first meeting of the season, only to lose in the second half.

Somerset coach Bill Powers said this was the first game where the Spartans struggled with adversity.

"Half the team is 14 years old, they're maturing," Powers said. "We'd have to play really well to beat Osceola, but we could give them a much better game than this."

Somerset did give Osceola all it could handle at the start, getting out to an 8-5 lead on the Chieftains. This was a game where Somerset only had five girls score, when there are usually eight or more girls contributing in the scoring column.

Megan Plourde scored 12 points to lead the Spartans, with Roxi Martin scoring nine and Ali Marson scoring eight. Plourde and Martin shared the team lead with seven rebounds.

One particular area where the Spartans struggled was their outside shooting. They were 2-20 from the three-point range in the loss.

Osceola played like a conference leader. During the decisive second quarter, the Chieftains were 11-11 from the free throw line. The Chieftains were led by seniors Angie Swanson and Ashlea Muckenhirn, who combined for 34 points.

Girls move to 9-4

Call them "The Young Guns." Somerset's girls drained eight three-pointers, seven of them from freshmen, in their 52-42 win last Tuesday.

The home-court win raised the Spartans' season record to 9-4 and it moved them into a tie for third place in the Middle Border Conference with a 5-4 record.

Freshman Bre Krohn led the Spartans with 14 points, including going 4-4 from three-point territory. When Ellsworth closed the margin to five points in the final minute of the game, it was Krohn's fourth three-pointer of the night that gave the Spartans some much-needed breathing room.

Somerset coach Bill Powers said when he goes to his bench, it changes the personality of the team. He said Krohn, Ali Marson and Kayla Solum are much more offensively inclined when they come into the game. He said starters like Julie Markfort and Kendra Steinlicht give the team a strong defensive presence, though Markfort did come up with several critical shots in scoring eight points against Ellsworth.

The Spartans got an early jump in this game, leading 17-9 after the first quarter. The lead stayed in the 8-12 point range for most of the remainder of the game.

Krohn also led the Spartans with four assists in the game. Megan Plourde scored 10 points and led the Spartans with eight rebounds. Roxi Martin had four steals, playing mostly against Ellsworth's top outside shooter, holding her to six points.
