Osceola tops Somerset in battle for MBC volleyball title
Somerset's hopes of a Middle Border Conference volleyball championship were shot down by the rapid fire hits delivered by the Osceola Chieftains on Tuesday.
Both teams went into Tuesday's match in Somerset with 6-0 records. While these were all tightly contested games, Osceola swept the three games by scores of 25-23, 25-19 and 25-23.
The match was played in front of one of the largest volleyball crowds ever for a Somerset match. The Spartans put up a diverse attack, using several different hitters to get their points.
Osceola relies heavily on seniors Paige Garriga and Lisa Rydeen. At times during Tuesday's match the Spartans used three blockers to try stopping Garriga, but that didn't stop the conference's most powerful hitter.
The conference championship returns to Osceola after a two-year hiatus. New Richmond won the MBC title in 2009 and Prescott took top honors in 2008. Before that, Osceola had a run of nearly a decade where the Chieftains were yearly conference champions.
