'outerSPACE' movies scheduled at The SPACE
The summer outerSPACE movies kick off this month when The SPACE hosts "Mamma Mia!" on June 25.
The idea for outdoor movies started in September 2008 when The SPACE hosted "Grease."
"It was kind of a test run," said Courtney Moe, creative director at The SPACE. "We wanted to see if there was an interest -- and there was."
The movies are played outdoors in the courtyard, 156 High St., Moe said.
Movies are projected onto a large homemade screen and the public can attend for free -- they just have to bring a chair.
"Last year we packed the courtyard," Moe said. "I'd guess there were 75-100 people here."
The SPACE plans to show one movie per month. June will feature "Mamma Mia!," "Hairspray" is planned for July and a double header of "Cars" and "American Graffiti" is planned for August.
"We thought the community might like the double header," Moe said. "'Cars will be early enough for families and the high school and college kids might like the later night with 'American Graffiti.'"
June's festivities start at 7:15 p.m. with live music from Gina Hanzlik and Jessie Lammers. An ugliest bridesmaid dress, best 70s outfit and best disco moves contest will be held along with an ABBA sing off.
"We wanted to give people something to do or something to watch until dusk when the movie starts," Moe said.
Concessions and beverages will be available for a small fee; the event is free to the public.
