Over 50 people apply for county treasurer job
Fifty-three candidates met the May 5 deadline to apply for the position of St. Croix County treasurer.
The County Board voted last month to take applications and appoint a treasurer to fill out the term of Cheryl Slind, who is leaving May 29 to take a job with a private software company.
Slind, who has been treasurer for six years, began a new term Jan. 1. The person appointed to replace her will hold the job until Dec. 31, 2012, but would have to be elected by citizens to serve longer than that.
A review panel will meet at 10 a.m. Thursday, May 14, in Room 1218 of the Government Center to sort through applications and make recommendations on which candidates to call for interviews.
Human Resources Administrator Tammy Funk said she expects interviews will be held the week of May 18.
Meetings of the review and interview panels will be open to the public.
The County Board's Finance Committee recommended taking applications rather than calling a special election to fill the position. Other supervisors agreed that holding a separate election would be too costly.
Current pay for the treasurer's job is $61,000. The treasurer also receives the same retirement contributions and health, disability and life insurance coverage provided to other county employees.
