Panthers end up third in D-SC duals
The St. Croix Central wrestling team placed seventh among 12 teams in the 2005 Dunn-St. Croix/Big Rivers Wrestling Challenge, held last Saturday at River Falls High School.
This is a significant step up for the Panthers, who were last in the tournament the past two years.
With their finish in the tournament, the Panthers had six wrestlers earn all-DSC honors. Curtis Hinkel earned first-team all-conference honors at 112 pounds. Wrestling their way onto the all-conference second team from Central were Mark Shaver, Trevor Helgeson, Ron Gilb, Garret Truesdill and Dez Zimmerman.
Eleven of the 14 Panther wrestlers in the tournament were placewinners and 12 of the 14 won at least one match in the combined conference tournament. The Panthers were one point behind Chippewa Falls for sixth place in the team standings.
Hinkel was the highest finisher for the Panthers in the tournament. He took second place at 112 pounds. He was beaten in the championship match by Tyler Hoehn of Chippewa Falls, 10-5. Hoehn is ranked second in the state in Division 1 at 103 pounds.
Trevor Helgeson took fourth at 130 pounds, where he is still working his way back into shape from a knee injury.
Two of the best performances for Central may have come in the fifth place showings from Kyle Helgeson and Dez Zimmerman. Helgeson seems to be a magnet for top-ranked opponents. In this tournament he went 4-1, including pins in his final three matches.
Zimmerman also pinned his final three opponents and his only loss of the day was in overtime.
Losses in lose matches hurt the Panthers several times in this tournament. Panther coach Brad Holzer said his goal for this week's practices is to find ways for the Panthers to win those close matches when they compete in WIAA regionals this Saturday. The Panthers will be wrestling in the Boyceville Division 3 Regional Tournament on Saturday, where action starts at 11 a.m.
