Panthers get a warm feeling from beating Amery
New Richmond Wisconsin 127 South Knowles Avenue 54017

It didn't make them feel warm all over, but it sure helped. Playing in a cold and rainy afternoon in Amery, the St. Croix Central baseball team rallied for nine runs in the final three innings to beat Amery 9-3 last Thursday.

"It's a lot warmer when you win," said Central coach Mike Fern.

The cold was compounded by the problems of Amery's pitchers. The Amery pitchers gave up 15 walks in the game. Central's hitters only came through with four hits, but they were well timed late in the game.

The game was scoreless until Central broke through with five runs in the fifth. Adam Reyzer and Lee Starck started the inning with walks. Chris Pizzi's double chased home Reyzer. Scott Ramberg then walked to load the bases. Tyler Cody doubled, sending home two runs. Two batters later, Jason Belisle singled, driving home two more runs.

The Panthers iced the game with four runs in the seventh. Garrett Ullom led off with his fourth walk of the game. Belisle then reached on an error. Amery's problems then blew up, with several passed balls, errors and walks leading to four runs.

Cody handled the pitching for the Panthers. The Panthers committed three errors, but they also had several big defensive plays that prevented Amery from mounting any big innings.

Fern said getting key hits and crucial defensive plays are a combination he's hoping to see more in the rest of the season. The Panthers have played musical chairs with a number of positions this season and Fern said he is now growing more comfortable with this lineup.

"Jason Belisle has come in and done a pretty decent job. And moving Chris Pizzi to third and Adam Brown to centerfield has worked out for us," he said.

No umps

Central was scheduled to play at Prescott on Monday and both teams were there, ready to play. But when no umpires showed up for the game, the game had to be postponed. A makeup date hasn't been set yet.

This Thursday the Panthers will take on one of the conference leaders when they play at Osceola. The Panthers will also be on the road next Monday, when they play at Boyceville.
