Panthers make a splash in bb regionals
The St. Croix Central baseball team made a splash in the opening round of WIAA regionals last week.
Playing in a steady rain, the Panthers made a splash with every step they took on their home field in Hammond last Thursday. But the Panthers also sent a message with their all-around play, topping Durand 8-4.
Central was the third seed in the regional and Durand was seeded sixth. The Panthers will now play at Chetek after the Bulldogs beat Mondovi in the opening round of tournament play.
Panther pitcher Tyler Cody threw the complete game win, getting out of several early jams. In the first inning Durand loaded the bases with no outs, but Cody worked out of the jam without giving up a run.
"That could have been a big inning," said Central coach Mike Fern. "Tyler pitched a heckuva game, especially for those conditions."
Durand threatened again in the second inning, getting two base runners. Central third baseman Chris Pizzi ended that threat, grabbing a liner that had been smoked in his direction.
The Panthers finally scored in the third inning, and they scored in every inning afterward.
The third inning run came home on a sacrifice fly to right field by Dan Odden. The Panthers added two more runs in the fourth, with Scott Ramberg singling home the first run and the second run scoring on a sacrifice fly by Cody.
Odden singled to start things in the fifth inning, scoring on a double by Garret Ullom.
Pizzi started the sixth inning with a single. He scored on Cody's single and Cody would score on a double by D.J. Frank.
The Panthers added two more insurance runs in the top of the seventh. Ullom singled and Rance Retherford reached on an error. Ullom scored on Adam Reyzer's groundout and Retherford came home on Ramberg's single.
Cody kept Durand off the scoreboard until the fifth inning. Durand scored twice then, before adding two more runs in the bottom of the seventh inning. Durand had two more runners on base before Cody was able to get the final out of the game.
The Panther coaches were in a dilemma on playing the game. Though the conditions weren't great, they didn't want to move the game back a day, because the Central senior class graduated the following day.
"In conditions like that, it's not always the better team that wins, it's the team that can get the breaks," Fern said.
