The third straight win by the St. Croix Central boys basketball team came last Thursday when the Panthers sharpened their claws on Colfax, 67-38.

Colfax was able to stay with the Panthers for a few minutes. Then Central guards Nate Fern and Tyler Cody began to catch fire. They combined for 14 points in the first quarter and Central's lead reached double figures. By halftime the lead was 17 points and it continued to grow in the second quarter.

Fern led the Panthers with 20 points, scoring 18 of them in the first half. Cody scored 13, Mark Arneson 10 and Garrett Ullom nine as the Panthers put together another balanced effort.

Ullom also led the Panthers with eight rebounds and D.J. Frank hauled down six. Fern and David Reyzer each produced six assists and Fern led the team with three steals.

The WIAA tournaments are in the near future and the Panthers are clearly gearing up for a strong tournament run. Early in the season the Panthers looked like a team that was missing something. Cody's outside shooting was that something.

"That has given us a different look," said St. Croix Central coach Mike Fern. "We've got a lot more weapons right now."

With Cody's ability to shoot from the outside, it frees up Nate Fern to be creative as a point guard. Fern is one of the best penetrating point guards in the area.

With Reyzer, Arneson, Frank and Ullom, the Panthers have the weapons under the basket. With Cody and the return of injured Adam Graf to shoot from the outside, defenses aren't able to collapse in around Central's post players.

The Panthers have two more conference games left before tournaments start and both of them should be good tests. This Friday the Panthers are at home against Mondovi. The Panthers will also be at home the following Friday, facing Boyceville.
