Panthers show they can compete with D-SC's best
New Richmond Wisconsin 127 South Knowles Avenue 54017

The St. Croix Central girls showed they are ready to compete with the best in the Dunn-St. Croix Conference.

The Panthers might have lost to Boyceville 48-47 on Saturday. But by playing the undefeated Bulldogs so closely, the Panthers showed they are continuing to improve. The loss leaves the Panthers at 3-2, tied for third place in the D-SC standings.

Central coach Shannon Berg said her players are excited about the progress they've been making.

"They came so ready to play, I couldn't ask for a better effort," Berg said. "My kids played four awesome quarters."

Right from the opening tip the Panthers showed they were ready for this game. They took the lead early and led 15-7 after a quarter. Boyceville put together a strong charge in the second quarter, but the Panthers kept their composure. The Bulldogs led 27-26 at halftime.

"That was a great position for us to be in," Berg said.

The second half was a classic half of basketball. Neither team was able to build a lead as both teams kept hitting key shots. The Panthers trailed by three points in the final seconds. They were able to get a two-point shot from Rachel Anderson to cut the margin to one, but couldn't get the ball back again.

Berg marveled at how every play she put in the game made a solid contribution. Ella Olson led the team with 18 points and eight assists. Rachel Anderson scored 12 points and led the team with 10 rebounds. Tracy Gillis scored eight points and freshman Dani Brown came off the bench to hit three big shots, finishing with seven points.

The maturation process continues to show whenever the Panthers take the court. Berg said the girls are getting better each game at picking the times to hurry the ball up court and seeing when they need to be patient.

"They realize the evolution they are making," she said. "The kids are a year older and are able to make better decisions than a year ago."

Defense does the job

The Panthers didn't have a great shooting night against Plum City last Thursday. But because of an outstanding defensive effort, the Panthers were still able to win comfortably. Central's girls won 45-20, holding Plum City to four or less points in three of the four quarters of the game.

"It was a good step for us as far as defense is concerned," Berg said. "We're seeing some of the things we work on in practice transfer to the games."

Central center Rachel Anderson outscored the entire Plum City team. Anderson hit 10-14 shots from the field and 2-3 from the free throw line to finish with 22 points.

Anderson also led a balanced rebounding effort. She finished with 10 rebounds, Katrina Brummer ended with nine and Ella Olson ended with eight. Olson also finished with 10 assists and five steals. Whitney Strickland stole the ball four times.

The Panthers only have one game scheduled over the next week. That game is this Thursday, when the Panthers play at Elk Mound.
