Panthers skunk Prescott, then bomb against Osceola
New Richmond Wisconsin 127 South Knowles Avenue 54017

Every baseball team in the area measures itself against Prescott.

So when the St. Croix Central baseball team knocked off Prescott last Tuesday, 6-5, you can bet the Panthers were feeling pretty good about themselves.

But in the topsy-turvy world of Dunn-St. Croix Conference baseball, that feeling didn't get to last long. The Panthers were knocked off at Osceola last Thursday, 13-9.

Central's win over Prescott ranks as one of the biggest games in the conference this year, with the Panthers delivering Prescott's first conference loss. It won't necessarily go down as a thing of beauty however. The Panthers committed nine errors in the 6-5 win.

Prescott had its chance to win the game, loading the bases with two outs in the seventh. Central pitcher Adam Reyzer was able to get a flyball to centerfield for the final out of the game.

Scott Ramberg, Dan Odden, Chris Pizzi and Reyzer each had two hits in the Panthers' balanced attack. Odden's two-run single during Central's four-run fifth inning was the pivotal hit of the game.

At Osceola the Panthers got a great start, scoring four runs in the first inning, which included consecutive doubles by D.J. Frank and Odden. Only Osceola answered with four runs in the bottom of the first. Central scored once in the second, only to see Osceola score five in the bottom of the inning.

The game was back and forth from there.

Panther coach Mike Fern said the team was playing good defense early in the season, when the pitching was being successful but the hitting was struggling. Now that the hitting has picked up, the defense and pitching have tailed off.

"I don't think anybody in the conference has great pitching," Fern said. He said he would like to see the Panthers be able to put together strong pitching, hitting and fielding in one game.

The Panthers are busy this week. On Thursday they play at home against Colfax. The Panthers will also be at home Friday, making up the game against Durand that was rained out on Monday.

Next Monday the Panthers will be playing at Boyceville.
