Parent group seeks new members
Since the beginning of the school year, a committee comprised of St. Croix Central Middle School staff and parents has been meeting to discuss the idea of having an adult volunteer program at the school, and they are ready to share the result with the public:
The SCC MVP (Middle School Volunteer Program) will hold an open house Monday, Feb. 25, from 6-7 p.m.
MVP is headquartered in Room 249 (up the fifth grade stairs, around the corner and to the right - next to the elevator).
Students, directed by art teacher Kim Knutson, spent months painting murals that cover all four walls; the floor is covered by a carpet remnant leftover from the recent construction and remodeling project; and the room is filled with "recycled" furniture, mostly from the old Middle School Library.
"We have been busy developing the procedures of this program to fit the needs of the staff based on their feedback," parent coordinator Michele Kerber said. "Now it's time to recruit volunteers to help fulfill the needs."
The SCC MVP mission is "to help support staff so they can focus their time, attention and energy on helping to make our middle school students successful."
Volunteers aren't limited to middle school parents - anyone with an interest in helping in the school is welcome, including retirees, grandparents and college students. Some of the immediate needs include copying, assisting with checking out books in the library, sorting and organizing reading units, grading assignments and supervising student workers in the store on Tuesday and Thursday mornings.

The SCC MVP Committee consists of parents Michele Kerber and Michele Lyksett, eighth grade teacher and student council advisor Laura Riba, guidance counselor Kat Brossmer and Principal Scott Woodington.
