Wisconsin deer hunters might not have to be up north to find that trophy buck. The Department of Natural Resources says the southern half of the state has at least 20 percent more deer than the department's recommended goals.

And many spots in the southern third of Wisconsin are 40 percent above the goals.

The DNR's Keith Warnke says there are ample supplies of bonus tags to shoot antlerless deer in those areas.

In the northeast, 11 deer management units are below their population goals. And in general, Warnke says fawn production has been about the same as last year.

The DNR's Web site www.wisconsin.gov, has a color-coded map which compares deer population to the goals in various areas.
