The event is a fund-raiser for Grace Place and Heifer International.

The goal for this year's Empty Bowls is to have students oversee all the committees involved in the planning of the project.

The evening's event is based around a fund-raising rice dinner. Cost of the event is $10 for a bowl of rice. A silent auction is planned as part of the night's events. The organizers are hoping that hand-crafted items or service donations can make up the majority of the auction items.

There will be many students involved in entertaining and enlightening those who attend the event. The high school band and choir will perform, with student directors leading the choir. Students will be performing speech and forensics works.

"The goal (of the event) is to raise awareness of hunger and to build community togetherness," said Jeanne Germain, one of the Somerset High School teachers involved in the project.

Community involvement is being sought for the organization of the Empty Bowls project. Anyone in the Somerset community who is interested in helping should attend an Empty Bowls public meeting on Monday, Jan. 12. The meeting will be held at 3:15 p.m. at the high school.

SHS students are already busy in getting this ready for this year's Empty Bowls meal. Art students already have more than 100 ceramic bowls completed. This year's Empty Bowls winning emblem has been picked. The winning artist is SHS senior Holly Germain.

Shirts and canvas tote bags with the 2009 Empty Bowls logo will be available soon at the high school.

Anyone interested in getting involved in the Empty Bowls Project or who seeks more information on the Project can contact Jeanne Germain at Somerset High School (247-3355) or via e-mail at: jgermain@somerset.k12.wi.us.
