Power is restored to New Richmond Middle School
New Richmond Wisconsin 127 South Knowles Avenue 54017

The power at New Richmond Middle School on Riley Avenue has been out since a transformer caught fire last week.

The fire fried the transformer along with several feet of primary line, said Dennis Horner, city utility manager.

Utility crews were working hard in the heat to replace the transformer and attempted to restore power on Monday before discovering the damage to the primary power line, he said. Crews were then forced to dig up and replace the line before power could be restored on Tuesday.

The transformer caught fire July 7 and failed after several pops and small explosions.

Located on the east side of the school, next to the former alternative school, the transformer was fully engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived on scene.

The school district will be responsible for the cost of the repair, Horner said. It's not yet known what that cost will be.

New Richmond Middle School will open its doors to students at the new location on Riley Avenue this fall. The former high school building underwent an extensive remodeling project and is almost unrecognizable in some areas - including the commons, kitchen and administrative offices.
