Preparations underway for NRHS Homecoming week
New Richmond Wisconsin 127 South Knowles Avenue 54017

Although the New Richmond High School Homecoming football game isn’t until Oct. 4, students are hard at work preparing for the week’s many festivities.

“We have many, many different types of activities for students at New Richmond High School, and the community of New Richmond,” said Casey Eckardt, assistant principal and activities director at the high school.

Over the weekend, student groups will begin painting downtown business windows for the upcoming week of festivities.

On Sunday, Sept. 29, the Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) will host a volleyball tournament, and the Student Council will promote locker decorating. Both events happen 5-8 p.m.

Throughout Homecoming week, students will participate in dress-up days:

  • Monday, Sept. 30: Class color day
  • Tuesday, Oct. 1: Dress your best day
  • Wednesday, Oct. 2: Duck Dynasty day
  • Thursday, Oct. 3: Decade day (You pick the decade)
  • Friday, Oct. 4: Tiger Pride

In addition, there will be special activities happening during lunch hour each day.

“We have pep assemblies on Monday and Friday,” Eckardt said. “The pepfest on Monday is to introduce all the Homecoming activities, introduce king and queen candidates, skits and the tradition of the mattress races, which are always exciting.”

During the mattress races, each class competes by having students lay on the gym floor head-to-head, while one student atop a twin mattress is handed down the line and back. The semifinals take place at Monday’s pepfest, and the finals happen at Friday’s pepfest.

Perhaps the highlight of Homecoming week, other than the Friday night football game, is the Varsity Show, which happens at 7 p.m. on Thursday in the high school auditorium.

“It’s a variety show,” Eckardt said. “We do have some school things in it -- for example the marching band performs, the cheerleaders do a fire-up cheer, the dance team does a dance routine, different sports teams do a skit -- and then there might be a garage band, there might be singers, there might be small groups, there might be comedy acts. It’s kind of a talent show. We get a nice crowd and there’s some nice talent.”

In addition, the king and queen will be crowned at the event. Admission to the Varsity Show is $1 for students, staff and community members alike, according to Eckardt.

Friday night’s highlight event is, of course, the Homecoming football game versus Ellsworth. Between the first and second quarter of the game, the New Richmond High School Athletic Hall of Fame will introduce its 2013 class of inductees.

“We have 11 people being inducted, and on Saturday we have the formal induction ceremony,” Eckardt said.

That ceremony includes lunch at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 5, with a 12:15 p.m. program in the high school commons. Tickets for the lunch and program are $15, and orders must be placed by Sept. 30. Tickets are $5 for the program only and are available at the door.

The Homecoming Dance is scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 5, in the high school commons. This year’s event promises to be an informal affair with students wearing white or yellow T-shirts for the “Light Up the Night” theme.
