Prom dresses don’t have to cost a fortune

Some students choose not to go to prom because they either can’t afford the expected attire or they don’t want to spend the money on formal wear and accessories, which can be pricey.

That made St. Croix Central prom advisor Becky Eckman wonder what could be done to remedy the situation.

“Some of the prom committee members didn’t want to spend so much on a dress,” Eckman said. “They wanted to be involved and plan, but weren’t going to go because they didn’t want to or couldn’t spend the money. Anybody should be able to go, be with their friends and get dressed up. Prom is just around the corner, which means it’s time to start looking for that magical dress.”

Eckman wanted to make it possible for anyone to go to prom who wants to, regardless of financial constraints, so she and others came up with the idea to collect gently used dresses and host a sale.

“We want you to know it doesn’t have to cost a fortune to attend one of the greatest high school events,” Eckman said. “We have gathered many gently used and a few new dresses that will be for sale.”

The sale will be held at Trinity Lutheran Church in Hammond from noon to 4 p.m., Saturday, March 22, the same day as Showcase Hammond.

“We want to help you look and feel like the belle of the ball,” Eckman said. “The dresses we have come in a variety of styles, from long and short ballgowns to straight and sleek silhouettes. We want to help make girls’ dreams come true.”

So far Eckman has collected 30 to 35 dresses. This year she is concentrating on dresses only, but if there’s enough interest, she may add accessories and shoes next year.

This year’s SCC prom theme is “Gatsby’s Garden,” which is a take on the 1920s era in the novel The Great Gatsby. Prom will be held Saturday, April 26. The Grand March takes places at SCC High School, with the dance following at Rafters in Stillwater, Minn.
