PSC expect hearings on Cassville power plant to be fiery
State regulators expect to get an earful this week about a proposed new coal-fired power plant in Cassville.
The Public Service Commission will hold a public hearing on the project this afternoon (Monday) in Cassville, and Tuesday in Portage, which is said to be an alternate site.
Alliant Energy says the new plant could cost up to $1.3 billion.
Critics say coal-fired plants and their emissions should not even be considered at a time when global warming is such a concern.
But Alliant says it will off-set those emissions by using renewable fuels for one-fifth of the plant's production.
It also plans to close an old coal-fired boiler in Sheboygan County, thus reducing total emissions statewide.
The PSC is expected to take final action on the new plant before the end of the year.
