Ruth Peterson, 87

Ruth J. Peterson (nee Heksem), age 87, of Hammond, passed away on Thursday, April 30, 2009 at the American Heritage Care Center.

She was born the daughter of John and Lena (Grant) Heksem in November of 1921. She attended country school for eight years and graduated from Hammond High School in 1939.

In July 1943, Ruth was united in marriage to Lyle Peterson. They would be blessed with two daughters, Glenda and Darlene. They farmed for many years in Hammond, retiring and selling the farm in 2002.

Her life revolved around being a full-time wife and mother. Ruth was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith. As a member of Peace Lutheran Church in Baldwin, she had been active in the church circle. Ruth also was active in the Homemaker's group. She and Lyle enjoyed traveling the U.S., mostly the west and southwest states. They spent many summers camping and fishing on Big Round Lake and Lake Chetac in northern Wisconsin, as well as several winters in Phoenix where they made and had many friends. Lyle was an avid woodworker and Ruth was a faithful sidekick, sanding and staining as needed. She was an excellent baker known for her pies, doughnuts and "Ruth's buns."

She was preceded in death by her parents; an infant son; great-granddaughter, Claire Sittlow; and her husband.

Ruth is survived by her daughters, Glenda (Ron) Pratt of Hammond and Darlene (Mike) Sittlow of Roberts; five grandchildren: Ann-Marie (Kevin) Kirsch, Susan (Jesse) Oliver, Brent (Michelle) Sittlow, Brian (Leslie) Sittlow and Becky (Joe) Cunningham; nine great-grandchildren: Olivia and Lyle Kirsch, Daniel and Alison Oliver, Lydia and Graham Sittlow, and Robert, Patrick and Liam Cunningham; sisters-in-law, Irene Garlich and Mary Peterson.

A celebration of Ruth's life was held at 3 p.m. on Sunday, May 3, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Hammond. Visitation was for one hour prior to the service at church. Interment was in the Peace Lutheran Church Cemetery in Baldwin. Memorials are preferred.
