New Richmond Wisconsin 127 South Knowles Avenue 54017

The St. Croix Central and Somerset girls golf teams both have advanced to the WIAA Division 2 sectional tournament level.

St. Croix Central's girls placed second at the WIAA Division 2 Amery Regional Tournament last Wednesday. Somerset's girls placed fourth. The top four teams at each regional advanced to the sectional level.

Those two teams will be playing in the WIAA Division 2 Luck Sectional Tournament this Wednesday.

Central qualified for sectionals by shooting a 436 score at the Amery regional. Somerset's girls qualified with a 447 score at the regional.

To say conditions were tough at the regional tournament would be a vast understatement. It was a brutally cold day with piercing winds. Many of the girls played in heavy jackets or parkas. Several wore scarves over their faces to protect from the wind.

This is the second straight year that Somerset has qualified for sectionals as a team. This is Central's first venture to the WIAA sectional level.

"We are just happy to be going to play at Luck," said Central coach Bob Nelson. "The girls don't like playing the Amery course and that alone produces higher scores. We have the ability to shoot better than we did but going to sectionals as a team for the first time is pretty nice."

Central was led by senior Katrina Brummer who shot a 103 at the regional. Connie Brummer shot a 108, Katie Moore a 112, Ella Olson a 113 and Shannon Perry a 116.

Somerset was led by senior Heather Lyons. Her score of 99 was one of three that were under 100 at the regional tournament. Amery's Renee Kuhl and St. Croix Falls' Brittany Nelson shared medalist honors by shooting 95 at the regional.

Somerset's other scores were a 115 from Shannon Schottler, a 116 from Linzy Hemmer, a 117 from Cora Brunell and a 120 from Lizzy Wittstock.

Somerset's girls made their move on the back nine. After shooting a 240 on the front nine, they shot a 207 on the last nine holes.

Our goal was to finish in the top four and we achieved it," said Somerset coach Bill Powers. "Heather Lyons shot a nice 99, which really helped out the cause."

Powers said the sectional course at Luck will be a challenge. It is a course with narrow fairways, which will be a challenge for the big hitters in the Somerset lineup.
