Scout troop earns 22 merit badges
During the week of June 16-22, 18 Boy Scouts from Troop 460 along with six Scout leaders attended weeklong summer camp at Camp Tesomas in Rhinelander.
Scouts were able to select merit badges that fit their interests, including: lifesaving, wilderness survival, and personal management. Ten Scouts completed requirements earning their Tenderfoot rank and three Scouts earned second class.
Free time at camp included shooting sports (black powder, rifle, pistol, shotgun, archery) dodgeball and four-square competitions, chess tournament, scavenger hunt, zip line, climbing tower, waterfront activities (canoeing, kayaking, and swimming), and many other program areas.
“What I love about Camp Tesomas is the wide range of programs available for Scouts and Scout leaders,” said Scoutmaster Jeff Kuhlman. “While our boys were scattered across 1,100 acres of Wisconsin northwoods acquiring and getting tested on various scout skills, I was able to complete First Aid/CPR training during the week with three other Scout leaders from Troop 460. This training will allow us to continue to be active in the outdoors and carry out the Scout motto which is Be Prepared.”The highlight of this year’s summer camp was winning the youth division’s cooking competition. The competition was judged by camp staff and had to include a presentation. Troop 460 prepared and cooked marinated ham pieces, bourbon and brown sugar baked beans, and apple/blueberry Dutch oven dump cake. The meal was served in plastic TV dinner trays and incorporated a self-written skit based on the TV show “The Price is Right.”The Scouts who attended summer camp are Ryan Affeldt, Peter Auvin, Cole Johnson, Caleb Kaufman, Adam Kuhlman, Brenden McNitt, Luke Melby, Travis Newham, James Nysse, Josh Nysse, Aaron Pazdera, Sean Pazdera, Jack Peper, David Postma, Caleb Schreiber, Isaac Schreiber, Jesse Stenske, and Martin Stenske. In addition to the Scouts who attended summer camp, Troop 460 had five Scouts (Austin Hatzenbeler, Josh Johnston, Mike Medini, Aaron Tenner and Jesse Stenske) that were interviewed and selected to work with camp staff during the summer as counselors in training.Tesomas Scout Camp is located in Rhinelander, Wis.
