Shooting lifts Tiger girls to first win
New Richmond Wisconsin 127 South Knowles Avenue 54017

A strong, consistent shooting night carried the New Richmond girls basketball team to its first victory of the season last Thursday at Prescott.

The win puts the Tigers at 1-1 in the Middle Border Conference and 1-3 overall. The Tigers complete the 2003 portion of their schedule with two games this week. This Friday, the Tigers play a home game against Ellsworth. Next Tuesday the Tigers will be playing at Spooner.

By hitting 50 percent of their shots, from two and three-point range, the Tigers were able to gradually build a secure lead in the game last Friday.

Kelli Emerson had another strong game, leading the Tigers with 19 points and seven rebounds. Tiger coach Eric Russell was enthused by the effort of Shannon Timm, who scored 10 points, including 6-8 from the free throw line.

"Shannon was being aggressive, that's what got her to the line," Russell said.

The Tiger bench also came through with a strong game, led by Heather Thompson and Krista Mitchell. Thompson is ideally suited to be a top reserve because she can play on the perimeter or in the post. In this game she led the team with five assists.

Mitchell supplied six points and four rebounds.

Russell acknowledged an improved effort by the girls in this game of creating quality shots, and then hitting those shots. He said the next big step the offense needs is to cut the number of turnovers. The Tigers had 20 turnovers in the game, compared to seven by Prescott. Most of the Tigers' turnovers are coming from passes, either that are thrown errantly or aren't caught cleanly.

The Tigers did an excellent job of team rebounding in this game. The Tigers outrebounded Prescott by 13 in the game, with four girls getting four or more rebounds.
