Smokin' Scooter's BBQ goes on the road
After working for the railroad for several years, Scott Smith wanted to "do something I enjoy doing" -- that's when he turned to barbeque.
The owner of Smokin' Scooter's BBQ, Smith said he started barbequing while working for the railroad company.
He said he's always worked on large batches, often serving a crew car of 30, 40 or 50 people.
It's the atmosphere of a barbeque that Smith really enjoys, he said.
"I really like being around people," he said. "The atmosphere of a barbeque -- seeing a pig in a roaster is a thing all in itself."
Smith said it's taken him about four years to perfect his craft. Now, he's competing in -- and winning -- several local contests.
"I took first place last year at the Family Fresh rib contest," he said. "I took first place at the fire department's chili contest last year and second this year."
The St. Paul,?Minn. native currently lives in Balsam Lake and does most of his business in the New Richmond area, he said.
In addition to barbeque, Smith also creates his own chili, Italian and side dishes.
While he enjoys all facets of his business, Smith said if it were up to him, he'd serve ribs every day.
"I've got a secret to my ribs," he said. "They fall right off the bone."
As the summer heats up, Smith said he expects business to pick up even more -- and that's something he's looking forward to.
Though most would consider it torture to stand in front of a smoker in 90 degree weather, Smith said it's better in the heat.
That's because the sun on the black metal helps to keep the smoker hot, making Smith's task of supplying firewood less daunting.
"When it's hot I can just hang out and talk to people more," he said.
There are no set prices to his business, he said.
"It all depends on the store prices," he said. "I always look for the cheapest price."
Smith said he's available to work all different types of events, whether it's a corporate function, fundraiser or a family affair.
"I really like working with people to figure out their events," he said.
Other than a week off last week, Smith said he's been booked solid all spring and summer.
The next big event he has is June 16-18, the pig roast at Family Fresh.
