Soaking rains cancel GND demo derby
New Richmond Wisconsin 127 South Knowles Avenue 54017

The Roberts Lions Club had to cancel the annual Good Neighbor Days Demo Derby scheduled for Sunday, June 1, due to heavy rain that fell throughout the region last weekend.

According to a post on the Lions Club Facebook page, not only did 4.5 inches of rain erode the sides of the newly expanded pit, but the Roberts Park Board was not allowing parking on site due to the waterlogged ground. Coordinator and Lions Club member Marv Flettre said there was a lot of washout behind the cement blocks.

“We need to do a lot of backfill and run a full culvert around the pit,” Flettre said.

Due to the extensive nature of the repairs, the Lions Club would welcome donations of or toward 180 feet of 24-inch plastic culvert.

Due to the repairs, the demo derby will not be rescheduled for this coming weekend as some had hoped. The event also needs to be advertised ahead of time to attract spectators.

“If we have a lot of cars and no crowd, it would make for a very quiet derby,” Flettre wrote on the Facebook page. “I know everyone puts a lot of work into these cars. If you run them elsewhere, I hope you have a good run. Once we reschedule, I hope you consider coming out. We will still be the bigger pit and nice purse.”

Flettre said a meeting will be held this week to discuss repairs and choose a date to run the demo derby.
