Somerset baseball team beaten in sectional final

The hopes to reach the WIAA State Baseball Tournament held by the Somerset baseball team were dashed in Tuesday's Division 2 sectional championship game.

After winning in the sectional semifinal Tuesday morning by a 2-0 score over Hayward, the Spartans were defeated 10-6 by Viroqua in the sectional title game Tuesday afternoon. The tournament was played at Cinder City Park in Altoona.

Somerset scored three times in the third inning to take a 3-1 lead. Two of those runs scored when senior Zac Waalen cracked a homer over the leftfield fence.

The Spartans were done in by Viroqua's six-run rally in the bottom of the third inning. Somerset finished the season with a 15-8 record. Viroqua, the Coulee Conference champion, heads to state with a 22-6 record. Viroqua will face Ripon in the opening round of the WIAA Division 2 state tournament at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, June 18 at Fox Cities Stadium in Appleton.
