Somerset boys run with purpose at St. Croix Falls
There’s a distinct amount of pressure on the Somerset boys cross country runners every time they compete.
With only five runners on the team, they have to show up every meet for the squad to be able to compete as a team. And because all five of their times count in every meet, they have to be ready to compete at their top level every time. They answered that call when they ran at St. Croix Falls last Thursday, placing fourth in the meet.
In Brandon Mondor, Cole Harty and Ethan Baillargeon, the Spartans had three of the top 13 finishers in the seven-team race. Noah Ashton and Austin Headlee, the Spartans’ fourth and fifth runners, made substantial improvements in their times to place 26th and 33rd.
Spartan coach Julie Mocadlo said the boys are becoming more impactful with every race. She noted that the Spartans were just 17 points behind Amery, which she considers one of the top teams in the Middle Border Conference.
Mocadlo said the top three Spartans are pushing each other along in each race. Mondor sets the pace. Harty is pushing himself to stay with Mondor and Baillargeon is doing his best to stick with Harty.
Injuries and illness meant the Somerset girls were running without three of their top runners at St. Croix Falls. The rest of the Spartan girls responded to the challenge with some of their best times of the season as the Spartans placed fourth among six teams.
Lauren Sandy and Katie Berg were thrust into lead runner roles for the Spartans. Mocadlo said that was a big step for first-year runners, but it should benefit them in their futures. Carrie Kulibert and Maggie Becher attacked the course and came in with some of the best times of their careers, with Kulibert placing 24th and Becher 26th.
Mocadlo said she was hopeful the girls could have a complete lineup by the time they run in the Middle Border Conference meet. The meet will be held on Thursday, Oct. 17, at Durand.
