The wind was blowing so viciously that the pole vault event had to be stopped, and other events at last Tuesday's Somerset track meet were adversely affected by the weather.

The windy conditions didn't stop any of the other events and this meet turned out to be a good experience for most of the athletes who took part.

Somerset got a second place finish from its girls team, while the Spartan boys were fifth among the nine teams competing. St. Croix Central's girls ranked third in the meet and the Panther boys matched that third place finish.

Somerset's girls fought through several injuries to get second place.

"We had 16 personal best performance in 12 different events," said girls coach Dave Praschak.

The Spartans got wins in the 400 and 800 relays and from Christina Flandrick in the 100 dash. Their numerous second and third place finishes helped them move up to second place as a team.

Somerset's boys continue to put in impressive showings in the relays, winning three of the four relays run in the meet. The Spartans also got wins from Jake Asp in the long jump and Justin Neumann in the shot put.

Central's boys lineup showed good balance as the Panthers scored in most events. Josh Manore was the only event winner, taking the top spot in the mile run. Another of the highlights for the Panthers was Sam Wells' best day in throwing the discus.
