Somerset Community Food Pantry seeks funding
The Somerset Community Food Pantry is seeking funding through grants for its operational costs from October through December, once it is no longer under the umbrella of the The Salvation Army Grace Place.
According to Somerset Community Foundation member Randy Rosburg, Scott Wells, another member of the SCF, is working with John Coughlin of United Way to write grants for the operational costs of the food pantry.
The grant being applied for would cover the the one time purchases of computers, a fax/scanner/copier/printer, office items, and continuing needs such as Internet and phone services, utilities, monthly rent and food to stock the pantry.
“Once these grants are submitted for the end of 2014, we then begin the grant writing process for funding for the 2015 year,” Rosburg said. “If anyone in the community wants to assist with grant writing they may contact Jean Wendt or myself.”
Community member Wendt will be the lead person to organize and provide operational aspects of the new Somerset Community Food Pantry. She has been working with Duana Bremer and Lori Scheder of the Salvation Army/Grace Place this spring to learn how to operate the food pantry, create current job descriptions and plan for the training and scheduling of volunteers.
Area attorney Angel Maack is also working with Coughlin to submit an application for a 501(c)(3). Rosburg said the application is almost finished and ready to be sent to the Internal Revenue Service for approval consideration. The waiting period to hear a decision is usually six to 18 months.
In the meantime, the SCFP is working with the St. Croix Valley Foundation as a fiscal sponsor.
“A special thank you to Angel and John for their work on this important part of this process of establishing the SCFP as its own entity,” Rosburg said.
St. Anne Catholic Church will allow the SCFP to operate out of the former Grace Place food shelf space once Grace Place relocates its shelter to New Richmond this fall.
The SCFP is seeking recommendations for a new site for the food pantry that is roughly 800-1,500 square feet, that is free, or available for a low monthly lease and utility costs.
