Somerset girls, St. Croix Central's DiSalvo qualify for Division 2 golf sectionals
The Somerset girls golf team and St. Croix Central senior Arinn DiSalvo were among the sectional qualifiers from last Thursday's Osceola Division 2 regional girls golf tournament.
Somerset advanced by placing third in the team competition. The top four teams advance from the regional to the sectional tournament level. DiSalvo qualified for state by carding the third lowest individual score not on a qualifying team. They advanced to the Division 2 sectional tournament, which was scheduled to be played this Tuesday in Hayward.
The regional meet was highly successful for Somerset. The Spartans went into the tournament with the fifth best scoring average, but managed to move up to third place in the team results.
Somerset coach Bill Powers said his team was excited about its finish and the chance to compete in the Hayward sectional meet.
Stacy Bracht led the Spartans by shooting 102, getting a 51 on the front and back nine. Powers said he was pleased with her steady play, which was also the case for Cassie Peterson, who was Somerset's second finisher with a 108. Megan Wolner played her way into the varsity lineup during the season and was the Spartans' third best scorer at the regional meet.
"Megan has been a pleasant surprise. She is getting better each meet," Powers said.
DiSalvo will be playing in the sectional tournament for the third time in her career. She shot a 93 at the regional tournament, finishing sixth overall.
Central coach Dave Larson will be able to walk with DiSalvo during her sectional round. He said his role will be less about talking strategy and more about keeping DiSalvo in the right mindset for the tournament. He said DiSalvo tends to hurry her shots when she gets in stressful situations and he wants to prevent that from happening.
As a three-time sectional player, DiSalvo is well prepared for the experience.
"State is her goal," Larson said. "She's capable (of advancing to state) if she shoots her best round of the year."
While DiSalvo played well at the regional meet, Larson expressed frustration that the rest of the team had an off day.
"We did not improve as the season went on," Larson said. "Consistency is the problem. All the girls can shoot in the low 50s."
