Somerset goes “Great Gatsby” at prom

Somerset High School celebrated its annual prom on Saturday, April 26, with “The Great Gatsby” as its theme.

Juniors Kaitlin Croes and John Amundson were crowned 2014 Prom Queen and King at the Promenade at Somerset High School.

After the Promenade, students were bussed to Stillwater, where they boarded the St. Croix River Boat & Packet Co.’s boat named Empress for the dinner and dance. At the end of the dance, students were taken to The Centre in New Richmond for their post-prom party.

Post-prom committee member Kimberly Wiederin, who has a son who is a junior this year, said the post prom party has been a mainstay in Somerset for 15-plus years.

“We feel that that’s a night that really warrants safety and peace of mind for the parents,” Wiederin said.

The post-prom party is an all-night alcohol- and drug-free event that prom attendees can go to in addition to the prom. Wiederin said more than 180 students participated this year. They had a casino night, a water volleyball tournament, a cash machine, swimming, obstacle courses, food and other activities.

The idea is to keep students safe, alcohol- and drug-free, and not driving on a night that potentially could give way to unsafe activities.

“The neat thing about this is the parents, board members, staff and community members that volunteer and just want to be there for the kids,” Wiederin said. “We had 55 volunteers, some of whom don’t even have kids attending school. We also had over 113 businesses from our community and surrounding communities donate to make this event possible.”
