Somerset honors fallen heroes
It was a cloudy and cool Memorial Day on Monday, May 27, but a good crowd was on hand in Somerset for various ceremonies across the community.
The morning started out with a breakfast for members of American Legion Post 111 and the Auxiliary, and then a ceremony at St. Anne's Church. After that, the crowd, veterans and the high school band marched downtown for a wreath ceremony on the Apple River bridge.
The group then traveled to Veterans Park for a brief ceremony and then completed the village celebration at Hillside Cemetery.
After the parade the Legion hosted a snack for the band before the honor guard went on to do small ceremonies at the Emanuel Lutheran Cemetery and the Pioneer Cemetery. The last ceremony for the day is at the Boardman Cemetery.
The group then returned to the Legion for lunch and the proper disposition of worn and damaged flags.
