Somerset hosts triangular meet
New Richmond Wisconsin 127 South Knowles Avenue 54017

The Somerset and St. Croix Central track teams got one final chance to get a look at all of their team members before they hit the final stretch of large meets this season.

That chance came last Friday, when Somerset held a triangular meet with St. Croix Central and Glenwood City as the visiting teams.

Somerset was able to record team wins on both sides of the meet.

Spartan girls coach Dave Praschak ranked this as one of the best performances of the season by his squad. A long list of girls had their best performances of the season and several were able to move into the all-time top 10 in school track records.

One of the best finishes of the meet came in the 1600 meters, where Somerset's Emily Witzmann and Whitney Langer battled Glenwood City's Michelle Jeske. Witzmann was able to hang on for the win, with Jeske in second and Langer in third. All three crossed the finish line within six-tenths of a second.

Witzmann and Langer also ranked 1-2 in the 3200 meter run.

Freshmen Kailey Klis and Brianna Johnson both moved into the all-time top 10 in the 100 meter dash with their times in Friday's meet.

Praschak was pleased that all four girls entered in the 300 hurdles ran personal bests. By finishing in 50.99 seconds, Julie Markfort has Somerset's fourth best all-time mark.

Somerset's boys were the winners in 10 events as they rolled to the team victory. They took both throwing events with Tyler Baillargeon winning the discus throw and Ambrose Martell the shot put.

The Spartans did well in the distance races with Jon Reyer taking the 800 and 3200 meter races and Lars Leemkuil winning the 1600. The Spartans also did well in the sprints, with Jeff Klis and Tom Hennessey taking the top two spots in the 100 and Corey Hehling winning the 200.

In the relays the Spartans made it a clean sweep, winning in the 3200, 800, 400 and 1600 relays.

St. Croix Central

Central's girls were edged out of second place by one point in the meet by Glenwood City.

Darcy Tharp was a double winner for the Panthers, taking the top spot in the 200 and 400 meter dashes. Casey Kooiman continues to show progress in the discus, where she took top honors. She was also the second place finisher in the 800 meters and Tharp placed second in the long jump.

The Central relay teams took second place in the 3200, 800 and 400 relays.

The Central boys did some things well, especially looking strong in the sprints. Central coach Nick Kaiser said the boys haven't been able to capitalize on that speed in the relays yet because they continue to have problems on making their handoffs.

The Panthers had three sprinters get under the 12-second mark in the 100-meter dash, which shows how much potential their relays have if the handoffs start working out.

"The best thing of the meet was watching freshman Josh Manore get personal bests in the mile and two-mile," Kaiser said. "He has worked hard and is improving each meet."
