Somerset senior Witzmann named to all-state team
Somerset senior Bryan Witzmann was named to the Wisconsin Football Coaches Association All-State Team on offense and defense for the 2008 season.
Witzmann was selected to the first team on offense and was an honorable mention choice on defense. He was the only player from the Middle Border Conference to receive all-state honors this season.
After missing his junior season due to a knee injury, Witzmann re-emerged this season as the dominant player in the conference. His blocking at offensive tackle was a key in the Spartans rushing for more than 3,000 yards this season. Witzmann didn't start the season on defense, but adding him to the defense helped turn around the Spartans season.
Among other players from the area who received all-state recognition were:
-- Hudson defensive end Seth Stanchik;
-- Elmwood linebacker Steven Pax;
-- River Falls running back Levi Johnson;
-- Ladysmith defensive lineman Zach Anderson;
-- Ladysmith tight end Joel Effertz (also honorable mention as a punter).
Honorable mention players from the area included:
-- Menomonie linebacker Lucas Ruhl;
-- River Falls offensive lineman Luke Johnson;
-- Menomonie tight end Levi Kraft.
