Somerset, St. Croix Central football to meet Saturday in Level 3 of WIAA state playoffs
Somerset and St. Croix Central will meet at Seibel Field in Somerset at 1 p.m. this Saturday in Level 3 of the WIAA Division 4 state football playoffs.
Somerset and Central advanced to Level 3 with wins over the weekend. Somerset moved to 9-1 for the season with a 33-10 win over Bloomer on Friday night in Somerset. St. Croix Central, now 7-3, needed a touchdown pass with 1:01 left in the game on Saturday to defeat Barron, 37-29.
Somerset is the number one seed in this section of the state, while Central was the seventh seed. Central's win over Barron was its second straight upset, after the Panthers upended undefeated Northland Pines in the opening round of the playoffs.
Somerset rode an outstanding performance from senior quarterback Tyler Ledbeter to the victory over Bloomer. Ledbeter ran for four touchdowns, totaling 267 yards on 17 carries. He also threw a 19-yard touchdown pass to Gabe Flandrick with 5 seconds left in the first half to put the Spartans ahead 14-3.
Somerset's defense continued to dominate games. The Spartans have allowed 17 points in their six home games this season.
St. Croix Central's game with Barron was expected to be dominating by passing, but both teams did their best to establish running attacks in the game.
Barron tied the score at 29-29 with 3:12 left in the game. Central was put in good position when Cody Nyhagen returned the ensuing kickoff to the Barron 47. Two runs by quarterback Carl Moll got the Panthers inside the Barron 20. On fourth down, Moll heaved a pass toward the corner of the end zone. Central junior Dante Carlson was able to haul in the pass from Moll for the winning touchdown with 1:01 left in the game.
