Somerset volleyball looking for strong finish to season

At the start of the season, the Somerset volleyball team was one of the stronger teams in the Middle Border Conference.

But the Spartans have lost the consistency in their play that was working heavily in their favor early in the season. The Spartans are hoping they can find that consistent level again for the WIAA Division 2 tournament play, which begins next Tuesday. The seeding for the regional tournament bracket is expected to be announced Thursday.

Somerset coach Sarah Praschak said she is expecting that the Spartans will be either the fourth or fifth seed in the regional bracket.

On Saturday the Spartans played in a tournament in Altoona, with the tournament used specifically to get the team playing as a cohesive unit again.

"It was an opportunity for people to shine as we put our final lineup together," Praschak said.

The Spartans lost matches against Altoona, Elk Mound and River Falls before finishing the tournament with a 25-18, 24-25, 15-10 win over Colfax.

Last Tuesday the Spartans locked up with Osceola in a classic tussle between the two long-time rivals. Both teams have been battling consistency issues and it certainly looked that way again Tuesday. Osceola won the match in a seesaw five-game battle.

"We had two great games, they had two great games," Praschak said. "It came down to the fifth game and they were able to finish it."

Osceola got wins in the first two games, both by 25-21 scores. Just when it looked like the Spartans were done, they found the elusive consistent play. They took the next two games 25-19 and 25-12.

The fifth game was the most representative of what both teams are capable of doing. With both teams showing a high level of desperation, the game was a battle to the final point, when Osceola won 16-14.
