Somerset's Dettmann, Belter playing in JUCO World Series
Somerset's Jared Dettmann and Dakota Belter are key parts of the Century College pitching staff that has carried the Wood Ducks to the Junior College World Series.
Century College earned its place in the JUCO World Series by winning the NJCAA Region XIII Tournament over the weekend. The World Series will be played on May 25-29 in Tyler, Texas. Century College was ranked third in the May 8 junior college national rankings.
Century defeated St. Cloud Tech 5-1 in the Region XIII championship game on Sunday at St. John's University.
Belter pitched the final inning to get the save in the championship game. He was then buried under an avalanche of teammates as the Wood Ducks piled into the center of the infield to celebrate the victory.
Belter also earned the save the day before when the Wood Ducks defeated St. Cloud Tech to force the championship game. Belter has been one of the leading closers in national junior college baseball this spring. He has allowed one earned run in 21 innings of work and he has recorded 10 saves. He has an 0.33 earned run average for the season.
Dettmann and Belter combined on a two-hitter that eliminated Mesabi 5-0 last Thursday. Dettmann allowed two hits while striking out nine in the first six innings of the game. Belter came on to pitch a perfect seventh inning, striking out all three batters he faced.
Dettmann is now 10-3 for the season, after losing his first two decisions. He has worked 60 innings, striking out 81 batters. He has a 2.92 earned run average in his 13 starts.
