The first Middle Border Conference win has continued to be elusive for the Somerset girls basketball team.

But the Spartans are coming closer to tracking down that first win.

Last Friday the Spartans went to Prescott and kept themselves in contention for most of the game. The Spartans scored the first hoop of the fourth quarter to cut Prescott's lead to 31-27. Prescott then hit several shots down the stretch to finish off a 40-27 win.

For the second straight game, the Spartans hit a respectable percentage of their shots, going 10-22 from the field. In their previous game against Durand, they were 8-16 from the field.

"We're getting better shots, now we need to cut down turnovers so we can get more shots," said Somerset coach Bill Powers.

The Spartans put together one of their nicest runs of the season during the third quarter of the game. With the defense picking up a couple steals on the press and the girls running the patterned offense well, the Spartans scored eight straight points in the third quarter.

Senior Mariah Belisle led the Spartans with seven points, seven rebounds and two assists at Prescott.

"Mariah played the best game of her career," Powers said. "She was a lot more aggressive offensively. She made some nice moves to the basket."

Whitney Langer led the team with four steals, including two that led directly to baskets.

Powers said the Spartans remain a defensively sound team. The most points the team has given up this year was 52 to Unity, and that was a double-overtime loss early in the season.

Prescott struggled early in the year, but recently got four players back and should be a strong team the rest of the season.

Slow start against Durand

Falling behind 13-2 proved too much for the Spartan girls to overcome on their home court last Tuesday.

Durand used the fast start to score a 50-22 win over the Spartans.

Julie Markfort scored seven points to lead the Spartans.

The Spartans sank 50 percent of their shots in the game. But 26 turnovers severely cut into the number of shots the Spartans could produce.

There are two MBC games on the slate for the Spartans this week. On Thursday the Spartans will be playing in New Richmond. Next Tuesday the Spartans will play at Ellsworth, a team that edged them by three points in the first round of the MBC schedule.
