Somerset's girls continue to look more and more like a competitive basketball team.

The Spartans put together two wild games last week. And while they came out on the losing end of both, they continue to show that they have evolved greatly from the team that went winless last season.

Friday's 32-29 loss to Ellsworth is a prime example. The Spartans played with infectious energy in the game, keeping pressure on Ellsworth until the final buzzer. The Spartans had their chances in the final seconds, but Kendra Steinlicht's three-pointer rimmed off at the buzzer.

There were numerous bright points to the game. Seniors Whitney Langer and Mariah Belisle played like seniors, taking charge on the court and aggressively trying to lead their team.

"The best thing we've done is move Mariah away from the basket," said Somerset coach Bill Powers. "One of these games she'll get 10-12 points."

Junior Julie Markfort was a rebounding demon in the final minutes. In the final minute of the game alone she pulled down three offensive rebounds.

Roxi Martin, Steinlicht and Jenna Rivard showed they can hit the outside shots that the Spartans need to provide balance to their offense.

The Spartans also played with a fiery intensity at the defensive end of the court.

The only major flaw in their effort Friday was free throw shooting. The team was a horrid 2-13 from the line.

"We played very good defense, we really worked hard and communicated well," Powers.

Roxi Martin led Somerset with six rebounds in the game and Markfort came down with five rebounds. Martin also led the team with three steals and three blocked shots.

The night before playing Ellsworth, the Spartans played into overtime at Unity, before losing 57-51.

This game ended up being a good test of Somerset's depth, with three starters fouling out during the game.

The 51 points is one of the highest totals for Somerset in some time. So is getting three players to score in double figures. Martin led the team with 13 points, Jenna Rivard scored 12 points and Langer scored 11 points.

Martin led the team with eight rebounds and Belisle added seven rebounds. Langer led the team with six assists and five steals.

The Spartans will be back in action this Thursday, when they play at Osceola, the defending Middle Border Conference champion.
