The final week of the regular season was certainly not easy for the Somerset's girls basketball team, but the Spartan girls made progress through their final three games.

The Spartans were scheduled to open the WIAA Division 3 tournaments on Tuesday with a home game against St. Croix Falls. The winner of Tuesday's game will be back in action on Thursday, facing the winner of the game between Glenwood City and Unity.

Last Thursday and Friday the Spartans ended the regular season with wins over Prescott and Grantsburg. This gives the Spartans a 12-7 record at the end of the regular season.

Several of the Spartan freshmen had big nights in the 57-42 win at Grantsburg last Friday, the third game in four nights for the Spartans.

Freshman Kayla Solum had her finest game of the season, with 13 points and six rebounds. Classmate Bre Krohn also scored 13 points and passed for five assists and freshman Megan Plourde scored 11 points.

Junior Roxi Martin also came through for the Spartans, scoring nine points and leading the team with 11 rebounds.

This came a night after the Spartans completed their Middle Border Conference season with a 55-44 win at Prescott. Somerset finishes in fourth place in the MBC final standings with a 7-6 record, a large advancement after finishing at the bottom of the conference each of the past two seasons.

Somerset coach Bill Powers said Plourde played perhaps her best game of the season at Prescott. Plourde scored 20 points and supplied eight rebounds, nine blocked shots, three assists and three steals.

Martin also had a nice night, with nine points, seven rebounds and three steals. Ali Marson led the Spartans with four assists in the game.

It wasn't until the fourth quarter that the Spartans could pull away from Prescott. The Spartans shot free throws well in the fourth quarter to pull away.

New Richmond loss

One of the toughest games of the second half of the season for the Spartans came last Tuesday in a 44-41 loss at New Richmond.

After an emotional week, and playing without Plourde, the Spartans struggled, trailing by as many as 10 points. In the fourth quarter the Spartans found their fighting spirit and got back into the game, but couldn't catch the Tigers.

Somerset was led by Krohn with nine points. Solum grabbed a game-high nine rebounds for the Spartans.
