Teams that thought stopping Mike Schachtner would equate to stopping the Somerset boys basketball team have found out they were wrong.

Osceola was successful in holding Schachtner to nine points in last Thursday's game. But Osceola had no way of stopping Somerset junior John Anderson, who scored 27 points in leading the Spartans to a 51-43 win over Osceola.

This was the first game for both teams in the Middle Border Conference this season.

Anderson hit the first shot of the game and he was on fire for most of the first half. Led by Anderson, the Spartans scored the first 11 points of the game and held a 15-9 lead at the end of the first quarter. Anderson scored nine points in the opening quarter, then scored seven more in the second. At halftime the Spartans led 24-15.

The Spartans were able to build a lead up to as much as 14 points during the game. In this rivalry no lead is safe. Osceola made a charge in the fourth quarter. The Chieftains were able to cause several turnovers with their full-court pressure. That was compounded with the Spartans being very impatient with the ball in the fourth quarter when they needed to run off some clock.

Osceola was able to cut the lead to 43-40 with 1:43 left in the game on Dave Schwab's third three-pointer of the fourth quarter. A basket by Brett Schreiner with 1:35 left built the lead up to five and forced the Chieftains to foul. Somerset made 6-8 free throws in the final 67 seconds to complete the win.

Somerset coach Eric Olson said he felt "uneasy" about the team's lead throughout the game. He said much of that was due to the pace of the game, which was played at a faster tempo than he would have liked. The fast pace resulted in the Spartans turning the ball over 16 times, a higher total than Olson wants to see in a game.

"We need to be a little more patient in our halfcourt offense," Olson said. "There was definitely room for improvement, but I was happy with the effort."

Anderson's shooting was nothing short of sensational. He made 5-6 shots from two-point range and he drained 5-7 shots from the three-point arc.

While Schachtner was held down in scoring, he finished with a team-high 12 rebounds. He helped the Spartans to hold a 29-19 rebounding edge in the game. Still, Olson said the Spartans have to do a better job of getting Schachtner involved in the offense.

"It was two-fold. We weren't doing a good job of getting him the ball and they doubled him every time he touched the ball," Olson said.

Another player who earned Olson's praise in the game was senior guard Jeff Klis. Klis did the best job among the Spartans at handling Osceola's full-court pressure. He was also the player who was assigned to guard Osceola's Dave Hogen.

"Realistically, that's the biggest assignment all night," Olson said.

The Spartans will be back in action this Friday in a home game against Baldwin-Woodville. The next action for the Spartans will be in the Simley Invitational on Dec. 29-30.
