It would have been hard to imagine a year ago that the Somerset girls basketball team would be pushing its way into the upper limits of the Middle Border Conference.

After last Thursday's 56-46 win over Prescott, the Spartans are now 4-4 in the MBC. And with Monday's non-conference 58-24 win over Shell Lake the Spartans are now 8-4 overall. Over the previous two seasons the Spartans had won one game.

The Spartans are a mix of veteran and young players and with every game they continue to blend together better. The best example of that might have been in the passing in the offensive end of the court against Prescott. The Spartans had 15 assists in the game, with seven different girls getting at least one assist.

"At the beginning of the year, three or four (assists) were a lot," said Somerset coach Bill Powers.

Somerset struggled in the first two minutes of the game, when Prescott built a 6-2 lead. The Spartans soon got their bearings and by the end of the quarter they'd built a 19-12 lead. They continued to play well in the second quarter, leading 33-25 at halftime.

At the start of the second half the Spartans ran into some offensive problems, going more than six minutes without scoring. It wasn't until freshman Megan Plourde scored with 1:35 left in the quarter that the Spartans broke that streak. Her shot was part of a 5-0 run at the end of the third quarter that rebuilt the Spartans lead to 38-31.

Prescott was hanging on by its fingernails in the fourth quarter, until Somerset senior Kendra Steinlicht drained a three-pointer from the corner with 3:17 left in the game to stretch the lead to 47-36. That shot seemed to take the last of the fight out of the Cardinals.

The Spartans had excellent balance in the game. Plourde led the team with 14 points, while Roxi Martin scored 12 points and Mallory Rorabeck and Bre Krohn each scored 10 points. Plourde led the team with 10 rebounds, with Kayla Solum adding five rebounds. Plourde's six blocked shots led the team, as did Rorabeck's three steals.

Easy past Shell Lake

The Spartans left Shell Lake's girls in their dust Monday. They rolled early, leading 32-10 at halftime and finishing with the 58-24 win.

Plourde put on a shooting showcase in the first period, scoring 12 of the Spartans' 18 points.

In this game the Spartans pushed the ball upcourt and scored numerous times off the fast break.

"We have a couple plays we run off transition, we've been working to run them all the way through," Powers said.

Passing continues to be an area where the Spartans are improving rapidly. They had 17 assists in this game, with nine different players getting assists.

With the team having such a big lead early in the game, Powers was able to give more playing time to his younger players. Two of the players who saw extensive playing time were freshmen Kayla Solum and Lisa Borgstrom. Solum scored nine points, making 4-5 shots, and Borgstrom scored four points.

The Spartans will be facing their toughest stretch of the season over the next week. On Friday the Spartans play at conference-leading Osceola. Next Tuesday the Spartans will be visited in a non-conference game by undefeated Bloomer, one of the top-ranked teams in the state.
