Spartans open by topping best of HON
Basketball fans all over the western part of the state were anxious to see what happened in Spooner last Friday night.
Somerset, expected to be one of the top teams in the Middle Border Conference, was playing at Spooner. The Rails are expected to be one of the best teams the Heart O'North Conference has to offer.
The game lived up to its billing. Spooner led 33-32 after three quarters, but the Spartans caught fire in the fourth quarter to win 56-42.
Somerset is led by senior Mike Schachtner, who has already signed a full-ride scholarship offer from NCAA Division 1 UW-Green Bay. The Spartans have worked hard in an attempt to build other offensive options for this season.
Schachtner scored 19 points Friday. Junior John Anderson stepped up and scored 17 points and junior Brett Schreiner added nine points.
"John played well, he was very aggressive," Somerset coach Eric Olson said of Anderson.
Schreiner also gives the Spartans added muscle around the basket. He led the team with seven rebounds in the game. Schachtner grabbed six rebounds. Trevor Lippman came off the bench to add five rebounds. The Spartans had a 33-19 rebounding advantage in the game.
Spooner had already played one game, where they had crushed Park Falls. Through the first three quarters neither team could build any margin. The game was tied at 17-17 before the Spartans scored four points in the final 30 seconds of the first half to take a 21-17 halftime lead.
When the Spartans pulled away in the fourth quarter, it was a team effort. Eight Somerset players scored in the fourth quarter, led by Anderson and Schachtner with six each in the quarter. Senior guard Jeff Klis scored all five of his points in the fourth quarter.
The Spartans started practice a week after most teams this season because of the success of the Spartan football team. Olson said the depth of the team was one of the key reasons the team played so well in the fourth quarter.
This Thursday the Spartans start their Middle Border Conference schedule. In that game, they will be visited by Osceola. The Spartans will also play at home next Tuesday, in a non-conference game against Grantsburg.
